In June 2019, Vertex announced the establishment of a new research site in the Boston area where research, development, and clinical manufacturing for cell and genetic therapies will be primarily based. Cell and genetic therapies represent two rapidly emerging therapeutic modalities with the potential to treat—and even cure—several of the diseases Vertex is focused on, including sickle cell disease, Duchenne muscular dystrophy and type 1 diabetes. Further investment in a research site specifically designed to advance these programs will be key to Vertex’s continued and sustained leadership in these exciting approaches. At Vertex Cell and Genetic Therapies (VCGT) our research teams will bring together the best biology, technologies and enhanced manufacturing capabilities to ensure we bring these cutting-edge transformative therapies to patients as quickly as possible.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute experiments for robust and scaled platform for pluripotent stem cell expansion/directed differentiation and other cell types
  • Participate in technology transfer to manufacturing and provide training for GMP production
  • Maintain electronic laboratory notebooks, analyze and present experimental data to the team, and write study reports
  • Draft and review study protocol and reports, ensure data integrity

Other duties:

  • Perform data review of technical reports
  • Effectively collaborate in a matrixed team environment to ensure project success
  • Draft Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and batch records for manufacturing in collaboration with Research and Quality Systems groups
  • Ensure raw materials are identified and available in time for laboratory activities
  • Communicate with Operations group to coordinate the maintenance of laboratory equipment


  • B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Bio-Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biology, or related discipline
  • 1 - 4 years of industrial experience in a process related science with some cell culture experience
  • Excellent communication skills with the proven ability to build open and collaborative relationships. Working effectively in matrix environment
  • Strong skillsets in cell culture techniques (preferably adherent or stem cell culture), aseptic techniques, microscopy imaging
  • Critical thinking, presentation, and organization skills a must
  • Attention to detail, and good documentation practices


  • Prior experience with cell culture bioreactors and flat culture
  • Experience with embryonic or induced pluripotent stem cell culture

  • Familiarity with flow cytometry, bioassays, and cell counting methods
