About the Job

In this role you will:

1. Partner with managing director, senior divisional leaders, and business partners by providing supporting, yet challenging consultation to enable the business to achieve its goals and activities within a smart-risk culture environment. Apply the risk domain discipline when evaluating risk matters and key decisions.

2. Provide strategic vision and leadership regarding existing and emerging risks (competitive, regulatory, operational, technology, and / or security) for the division.

3. Manage staff, building a strong and high-performance team atmosphere. Conduct regular one-on-one meetings and provide coaching, training and motivation as necessary to develop staff. Set performance standards, review performance and provide feedback.

4. Help define and evolve the framework for monitoring and analyzing risk for the division, including the supporting data, tools and technology, ensuring alignment with corporate frameworks. Guide the division in determining its application.

5. Contribute to leadership of the risk governance program for the division, resolving and ensuring adherence to risk policies, firm standards, and industry best practices. Participate in firm-wide risk committees.

6. Build strong working relationships across the division and with internal and external partners, including Enterprise Risk Management, Enterprise Security and Fraud, Compliance, Legal, and Internal Audit to analyze and resolve potential risk/compliance issues and understand changes in the regulatory environment.

7. Collaborate with business partners to ensure readiness for regulatory inspections and examinations. Work to address gaps both pro-actively and reactively. Evaluates and recommends change, as needed, and in coordination with key business partners.

8. Improves risk and governance acumen among business counterparts. Builds knowledge of Vanguard and IIG to propose and develop analyses that improve the governance understanding of IIG, its business segments, clients, products and/or relevant activities. Provide risk governance coaching and advice to Vanguard’s senior leaders.

9. Promote relationship management and pro-actively cultivate effective communication. Anticipates clients’ needs and ensures client satisfaction related to the services being provided. Communicates clearly, comfortably and professionally to all levels of management and external stakeholders (e.g. regulators, auditors, clients, etc.). Ensures communications are timely, significant and accurate.

10. Present consolidated divisional executive reports and risk exposure metrics to senior business leaders and the IIG Risk Council.

11. Maintain an in-depth understanding of Vanguard and its industry. Take an active role in industry forums and remains current on issues and regulatory events affecting the division, firm, and industry.

12. Manage and/or participate in special projects and cross-functional teams/initiatives as needed and performs other duties as assigned.

What it takes:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required with relevant emphasis or related certification or equivalent combination of training and experience. Advanced degree is helpful.
  • A minimum of 10-15 years general business experience. Deep experience in a risk domain (e.g., operations, regulatory, financial) from which knowledge of internal control and risk management was obtained.
  • A minimum of 5 years demonstrated leadership experience. 
  • Exceptional leadership, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of risk management theories and experience in applying risk and control management concepts.
  • Consistent track record of success serving and navigating relationships with internal and/or external clients, including influencing and negotiating with others.
  • Proven record of success serving and navigating and influencing relationships with internal and/or external clients, including CEO, Senior Staff and other senior leaders.
  • Ability to communicate, influence, navigate, persuade and build agreement across senior leader and/or a matrix structure.
  • Ability to generate creative approaches to the evolution of risk management.
  • Ability to complete risk management certifications, as needed.
